Lesson Plan: K-2 Writing

In this lesson, entitled Authentic Writing Experiences and Math Problem-Solving Using Shopping Lists, students engage in a meaningful writing exercise. Although the lesson suggests using food for the shopping part of the lesson small items or images of “products” can be substituted. There is also a cross-curricular connection to math since the students have a budget when they make their list. The approximate time to complete the lessons is three 50-minute periods.

Differentiated Instruction Tools: Tiered Curriculum

This site contains examples of tiered instruction and how it is an effective differentiated instruction tool. Sample lessons are included for math, science, and language for all grades from K- 12. While the site is American and not all of the lessons match up with the Ontario curriculum, they do provide a sense as to how occasional teachers can differentiate the Ontario curriculum to better meet student readiness level, interest, and learning style.

In four 30-45 minute lessons students create an Action Alphabet Book. The lesson plans also contain a link to an online tool called the Alphabet Organizer which allows students to create an alphabet book or chart.

These cross-curricular activities are called  Introducing the Venn Diagram in the Kindergarten Classroom. In addition to language, the activity description also includes instructions for adapting the activity to math, art, social studies, and science.

In this activity entitled, Guess What’s in the Bag: A Language-Based Activity for K-2, students improve their oral communication skills by describing objects they can touch, but not see, inside a paper bag. The class has to guess what the object is based on the descriptive clues the student with the bag provides . The approximate time required for the lesson is 50 minutes.

This activity, entitled Growing Readers and Writers with Help from Mother Goose for K-2, helps to develop reading and writing skills by using nursery rhymes to focus on rhyming words, beginning sounds, and letters of the alphabet. This activity can be done 5-10 minutes each day. Links to nursery rhyme sites can be found in the lesson plan.

This activity, entitled Composing Cinquain Poems: A Quick Writing Activity for K-2,involves students in listening to, reading, and writing cinquain poems. Links to supporting resources for the lesson include themed graphic organizers. There is also an extension activity for creating a stapleless book from the cinquain poems that the students write. The lesson is designed to be completed in a 60-minute period.
